The Holiness Tradition – or the Way of the Virtuous Life – is an ancient tradition which finds its beginnings in the fact that Jesus emerged from the forty days’ temptation in the desert having overcome the temptation of the “easy way.” Jesus was tempted throughout his life and ministry to simply perform miracles and signs so that people would believe. He rejected this easy way in favor of a radical alternative way: using his power to reveal the Kingdom of God working in and among the people. Jesus points to an inner life with God that transforms the heart and builds deeply ingrained habits of virtue. These holy habits stand at the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, the real starting-point for this tradition. We will explore the Sermon on the Mount and the Psalms as they reveal life in the Kingdom and the character of God.
